Prof. Collen Masimirembwa, director of SPARK GLOBAL Africa, has been appointed chair of the Developing Countries Committee at the Pharmacogenomics Research Network.

Prof. Masimirembwa is President and CEO of the African Institute of Biomedical Science and Technology (AIBST) in Zimbabwe, and is a Distinguished Professor at the Sydney Brenner Institute for Molecular Bioscience (SBIMB) at University of Witwatersrand in South Africa. He is also the President of the African Pharmacogenomics Network.

The Pharmacogenomics Research Network (PGRN) is a community of scientists focused on research and translation of pharmacogenomics and precision medicine. Its mission is to catalyze and lead research in precision medicine for the discovery and translation of genomic variation influencing therapeutic and adverse drug effects. As of July 1, the network became an independent scientific society after 20 years of NIH funding.

The Developing Countries Committee covers South America, Africa and Middle East, and southeast Asia, and will serve to stimulate research, education and practice of pharmacogenomics as part of the new PGRN.

Prof. Masimirembwa said, “The Pharmacogenomics Research Network is one of the biggest and most vibrant networks in our field. This appointment consolidates my efforts to promote this field of research and innovation.”

Congratulations Prof. Masimirembwa!
